The Bloody King
It's messy work but somebody has to do it
The Bloody King is a fine, high quality, horror-themed Giclée print for my RAW Perth show May 26 2016. I was definitely going for something darker with this one, hopefully creating a moody and disturbing atmosphere. It is a 40 x 50cm artwork (plus border) and is signed, numbered and dated by the artist. It is printed on an Epson Stylus Pro 9900 on Ilford 310gsm Cotton Rag Textured Paper using Epson Ultrachrome Archival Pigment Ink which is standard for all my limitied edition prints.
BEHIND THE SCENES
This piece was born from another similar one. I wasn't happy with the direction the style was taking me, so I went back to the beginning and produced the below sketch. The rest of the images outline the stages of detail throughout the production, from shaping the initial character, to adding background and textured elements. Even the character himself metamorphosed from a disturbed fellow with a sack on his head to an equally disturbed caprid or equine-like creature.
The below image represents my first real foray into using illustrator brushes to generate some of the extra detail, and I think they have helped me to create a much more fully-realised piece. I also really enjoy pairing textures with my illustrations (which are vector based) for the added depth and character.
